New Zealand Flax are large strap-leafed perennials which are evergreen in milder climates. They can be killed to the ground in frost.  Flax will flower in the garden in late spring or early summer, and are not only showy but also attract hummingbirds. The flowers are held upright on a tall stalk above the foliage.  The flowers and dried fruit are used in larger flower arrangements.  There is a tendency for the slower growing hybrids to struggle in heavy clay soil.  New Zealand Flax is not grown for its flowers as much as it is for the colorful foliage and form which is so striking. They are excellent container plants.  They tolerate a wide range of soils and take drought well once established.  These are hardy to about USDA Zone 8.  Heather mixes well with it in both the garden and in containers. They like full sun best.
