I am asked frequently what my favorites are. Here is my list. Remember, I have a colored foliage obsession (not a balanced perspective whatsoever). My choices change with the seasons and new introductions. So here are FEW of my latest favorites.
Calluna vulgaris 'Wickwar Flame' and 'Firefly' for their wonderful winter red colors. Calluna vulgaris 'Hillbrook Sparkler' has the most unusual foliage color. It is a great contrast in the garden--hard to describe. It's a combination of pale gold, cream and green part of the year and copper, pink, red and orange in others. Calluna vulgaris 'Naturpark' is the most variegated heather I have ever seen. There are inferior clones out there. We found the best one. Calluna vulgaris 'Red Fred' for its name (which I love the sound of) and its early, long lasting red spring colored tips. Calluna vulgaris 'Red Pimpernel' for its early and long flowering crimson blossoms. Calluna vulgaris 'Sesam' has rich orange gold rust colored foliage in winter with a strong upright habit. Calluna vulgaris 'Silver Cloud' has superior downy silver gray foliage and a low growth habit. A handsome plant. Calluna vulgaris 'Velvet Fascination' has downy silver blue green foliage. A magnificent foliage plant.
Daboecia cantabrica 'Rainbow' has striking variegated foliage as well as purple flowers over a long period.
Erica carnea 'Ann Sparkes' for its red foliage and winter bloom at the same time. Erica carnea 'Bell's Extra Special' with its golden whiskey colored foliage and nearly red flowers. Nice combination on a handsome plant. Erica carnea 'Golden Starlet' for its dazzling golden foliage beautiful throughout the year. Erica carnea 'Nathalie', 'Rotes Juwel' and 'Challenger' for their glowing red winter flowers compared to pinks and whites. Calluna vulgaris 'Silver Cloud' has superior downy silver gray foliage and a nice growth habit.
Erica cinerea 'Atrosanguinea' for flowers so flashy they nearly glow in the dark. Erica cinerea 'Celebration' has the most beautiful golden foliage--actually foliage of any plant we have. The plants are stunning. Erica cinerea 'Velvet Night' for its unusual flower color - nearly blackish purple.
Erica erigena 'Irish Dusk' is my favorite winter bloomer. It is an upright 2' tall by 1 1/2' wide. Handsome gray green foliage and salmon rose pink flowers. The flower color is unlike any other winter bloomer.
