Erica vagans grow naturally in poor soil and rocky outcroppings on the Lizard Peninsula in England, but seem to adapt to heavy alkaline soils with added peat and high magnesium.  Flowering period is usually from July through October.  Flowers are bell-shaped and become an attractive russet-brown for winter.  Stems are stiff and upright, and plants are very symmetrical making an ideal hedge or border.  These are very attractive plants.  Plants should be pruned to the base of the flower stem in early spring, but pruning is not essential every year.  If stems shatter from winter damage, they can be pruned to the ground.  These are the most drought tolerant of the heaths once established.
